Inside ASPI: How the Production Advisory Committee Selects Must-See Theater

Woo hoo! It’s time to unveil a new season of shows for Abrams Spotlight Productions. How exciting! But
how did we get this pivotal moment in the history of the universe? (I mean, the history of the theater.)
Well, it takes a small community to select the shows for the large community who then presents the
shows to the broader community. This is “community” theater times three!

Role of the Production Advisory Committee

Let’s look closely at the role of one of the small communities at ASPI, the Production Advisory
Committee, comprised of a group of seven theater experts. The Production Advisory Committee (PAC)
researches and selects the shows for ASPI to produce.
Kelsey Steeno is one of the PAC members.
“It is great to serve on this committee because I like to do research on shows to see what would be a
good fit for this theater,” she said. “We work together as a team to put together a great season.
Everyone’s input helps.”

Director Submissions & Brainstorming

The PAC, which meets in the spring and summer, helps determine the structure and schedule of the
upcoming theater season, which is announced in the fall. The committee asks directors to submit their
ideas and reviews the scripts that directors suggest. They also brainstorm ideas for other scripts that
would be a good fit for ASPI.
“There are a lot of shows that I would love to do, but the show has to fit with the theater mission and
talent and audience type,” Kelsey said.

How ASPI Chooses its Shows

When selecting shows, the PAC considers a lot of different elements including director availability, cast
size, number of roles for each gender and age group, royalty availability and costs, revenue calculations,
and the cohesiveness of the season as a whole.
One of the shows on the PAC’s “Wish List” is Mamma Mia.
“This show is performed a lot, so it is harder to get rights. Plus, now it is touring again,” Kelsey said.
While Mama Mia waits in the wings, ASPI unveiled three other amazing shows for the 2025 season:
Godspell, The Play That Goes Wrong, and Dickens Jr. We can’t wait to see how these shows unfold.

Drumroll please…

The Productions

Godspell

Director: Elizabeth Jolly-Haslitt

Performances: March 13-23, 2025

Godspell is based on the Gospel of Matthew, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Yes, the same composer for Wicked and Pippin! This timeless tale of friendship and love is demonstrated by an eclectic group that teams up with Jesus. Using a blend of parables, songs, games, and dare we say tomfoolery, Jesus’ life is played out onstage. In this new age production Jesus’ message of kindness, tolerance, and love shines vibrantly!

And did we mention that there will be nine shows instead of the usual eight?!

The Play that Goes Wrong

Director: Mike Eserkaln

Performances: May 8-18, 2025

The Play That Goes Wrong begins before the curtain has even been raised! After benefitting from a large and sudden inheritance, the inept and accident-prone Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society embark on producing an ambitious 1920s murder mystery, ‘Murder at Haversham Manor’.

With the audience present while the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society prepares to stage their new production, the set is unfortunately not yet complete and there is no time to finish it off…..the show must go on!

However, the props start to disappear, actors go missing, and the set begins to collapse around, and often on, the cast. Mayhem ensues, the acting gets worse, and the set becomes increasingly dangerous. But the company struggles on regardless! The question is whether any of the cast and crew will remain standing, or conscious, by the final curtain?!

A Ghost Tale for Mr. Dickens, Jr.

Director: Bobby Buffington

Performances: December 4-14, 2025

A Ghost Tale for Mr. Dickens JR. is an adaptation of book number 44 in Mary Pope Osborne’s award-winning fantasy adventure series Magic Tree House. The book series has sold more than 100 million copies and is available in more than 100 countries around the world!

In this holiday-themed story, Jack and Annie’s tree house takes them to the foggy streets of Victorian London where they will learn the importance of charity and kindness through their friendship with legendary author Charles Dickens, who is suffering from a severe case of writer’s block. While Jack and Annie witness the hardships faced by the poor, and Mr. Dickens is haunted by sad memories of his own, they inspire Mr. Dickens to write one of the greatest holiday stories of all time! This musical puts a unique twist on a famous holiday tale!
